MRC2
The MRC2 is the latest model and replaces the MRC1.
Overview
The MRC2 is a standard 25mw power Byron radio (LIPD band) tag designed for the Honeywell Elster V100 DN20 water meter. It is an upgraded version of the original MRC1, with multiple battery options and improved design and options.
Taggle’s MRC2 pulse-count AMR module is a low-cost, low-power transmitter designed specifically for use with Elster’s 20mm V100 water meter, which is used in the majority of domestic dwellings in Australia.
The MRC2 is fitted with a Hall Effect sensor that out-performs the more widely used T-Probe or reed switch sensors. The MRC2 monitors consumption continuously and transmits this to the network on an hourly basis, or more frequently if required.
The SP2A is a Generation 2 device, and therefore does not have full Generation 3 capabilities such as:
no NFC functionality
default security level as per the ADC-1
The Tags is white in colour and is offered with an optional heat shield for exposed locations.

Functional description
Radio - Standard power 25mW Byron radio operating in the LIPD band.
Sampling and Transmission - Hourly pulse counting and transmissions.
Battery - The MRC2 ships as a 3 x AA-cell or a 1 x C-cell version. Please note that the 1 x C-cell version is classified as a Dangerous Good as per the FAQ’s below.
NFC - No NFC support.
Environmental protection - Potted device and IP68 rated.
Clamps - The MRC2 supports the existing MRC1 Short and Long Nose Clamp clamps.
Flight Mode - The device is placed in Flight Mode once manufactured.
The MRC2 device must be ‘Activated' or 'Swiped’ when installing to commence hourly broadcast of data, and to ensure good signal is being heard by the receiver. See the V100/MRC1 Installation page for more details.
Heat Shield (Optional Extra) - For locations in direct sunlight or where there is a concern the device may be exposed to sun and heat for extended periods. This will assist with reducing the MRC2 device being operated outside of its heat specifications. The heat shield only comes in the colour white.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the differences between the MRC1 and MRC2?
The MRC2 is slightly taller than the MRC1.
The MRC1 only supports 1 x AA-cell, whereas the MRC2 supports multiple battery configurations:
3 x AA-cell, or
1 x C-cell.
Heat Shield accessory (sold separately).
White in colour (no other colour - GREEN is NOT available).
Is the commissioning and activation process the same as the MRC1?
Yes. Similar to the MRC1, the MRC2 does NOT support NFC.
What is the MRC2 colour?
White, to reduce heat impact on the batteries.
Is the Heat shield a frost cover?
No. The heat shield is designed to reduce the heat exposure of the MRC2 battery compartment to extreme heat or direct sunlight. It is not designed to work as a frost cover or perform any other role.
Does the MRC 2 support the Short-Nosed Clamp?
The MRC2 supports existing stock of legacy (MCR1) Short Nosed Clamps.
Taggle will not be producing more Short Nose Clamps, requiring a transition to:
A baton tag - i.e., SP2A with a T-Probe, or
If a large volume (i.e., >2000 units) is required, please contact the Taggle Sales Team to obtain a quotation.
What is the warranty on the MRC2 devices?
The warranty of the currently released variant of the MRC2 is:
Variant | Warranty period |
|---|---|
MRC2-T1-I-1B-NC-0-0-AU | 10 years, with a slide down reduced warranty from year 6 to year 10. |
MRC2-T1-I-1B-LNC-0-0-AU | 10 years, with a slide down reduced warranty from year 6 to year 10. |

MRC2-T1-I-3B-LNC-0-0-AU | 10 years, with a slide down reduced warranty from year 6 to year 10. |
Please note that the MRC2-3B variant is not longer available for sale. It has been superseded by the MRC2-1B variant.
What is the expected battery life of the MRC2 devices?
3 x AA-cell has a 15-year battery life (no longer available).
1 x C-Cell has a 20-year battery life (released).
Which version/s of the MRC2 are classified as a Dangerous Good?
The MRC2 with 1 x C-cell is classified as a dangerous good.
Battery Life (Forecasted) | Battery | Dangerous Goods Classification |
|---|---|---|
MRC2-T1-I-1B-NC-0-0-AU | 1 x C cell | Class 9 |
MRC2-T1-I-1B-LNC-0-0-AU | 1 x C cell | Class 9 |
